Charging at the track
« on: April 08, 2014, 08:20:14 PM »
I was originally looking at using the Aerovironment Turbocord - portable 120/240V EVSE and was advised that particular charger would have issues with pulling from my generator given the L14-30P it uses for 240V. Since I was looking at charging from the 240V on my generator I gave EVSE Upgrade a call. I sent Mark the info on my generator and he was extremely helpful.

Set me up with a Nisson Leaf charger that I can charge via 120v (with appropriate pigtail connector) and 240v (with a bare pig tail). I had to source the Male L14-30P plug that I needed for my generator and connect it to the bare pig tail.

Did a test tonight and all appears well. Plugged in to my generator's 240v slot it is pulling at 21amps and shows a much lower charge time than the wall plug does. No circuits popping on my generator and charger itself is showing no faults.

I'm happy. This will help greatly to keep me charged up at the track.

That is the charger I want! I was ahead of the curve when I found this one two years ago.

You can fit other adapters for any 240v plug and also use 110... This should be standard for the Empulse R.
For me this would expand my charging stations to include campgrounds as well...

Yep. I'd call Mark at evseupgrade. He's really helpful and knowledgeable.

That reminds me..... I need to finish my openevse. Goes higher than my charger will allow and does 120v and 240v... So future flexibility if I get another ev.

For most of my charging the 120 does fine.... But 240 is nice when not at home.

An EVSE is essentially a fancy extension cord. The onboard charger on your bike is what actually pulls from the AC supply; and it will do so at the lower rate of the current advertised by the EVSE and the maximum current rating of the charger.

You might need an adapter for the 240V socket on your generator, but I think the TurboCord would work as well as any other EVSE.

If the track has decent facilities, then they probably have hook-ups for RVs, which typically use a 220Vac / 30A service.  If you can terminate a Level 2 EVSE with the appropriate connector, this works very well for charging at the track.
