Clipper Creek LCS-20
« on: June 10, 2014, 12:10:55 PM »
240V 15A EVSE, hard-wired to a 20 amp breaker. $395 with a 3 year warranty.

Nice to see the equipment dropping in price. This would be perfectly suited to the Empulse or any other EV with a 3 kW charger, provided that it is connected to typical US 240V.

I need help interpreting the technical info.  Would this be ready to use with the power available at most RV parks?  I don't see a discussion of the plug.  Does Clipper Creek sell adaptors?

LCS-20 is hardwired.

There are -P variants of the LCS series that are available with molded plugs in several different types. Clipper Creek doesn't list -P variants for the LCS-20, but does for the LCS-25 (20A supply, 25A breaker, $495 by itself).

LCS-25P is available with 14-30, L6-30, 6-50, and 14-50 plugends for $549.

I would assume LCS-20P will eventually be available with a plugend for $449, but it should be relatively easy to wire up your own plugend for less with a LCS-20.

Protomech,

I'm considering the purchase of a portable level 2 EVSE for my rides. I'd like to hear your thoughts on the usefulness of the newer Clippercreek LCS-25P or Aerovironment turbo cord in charging a bike at a level 2 and taking it with you on the road.

Thanks,

LGHTCYCL

LGHTCYCL,

The Empulse onboard charger can pull a maximum of 14 amps AC, no matter the voltage.

Turbocord:
- rated for 20 amp 240V circuit breaker, supplies 16 amps AC
- weighs 4 pounds
- indoor / outdoor rated
- costs $600, +$50 for a 120V adapter (rated for 15 amp circuit breaker, supplies 12 amps AC)

LCS-25P:
- rated for 30 amp 240V circuit breaker, supplies 20 amps AC
- weighs 9 pounds
- indoor rated only
- costs $550

The LCS-25P is significantly heavier and bulkier, and it is rated for indoor use only. It is a little more powerful and a little less expensive, but for portable charging the Turbocord is the way to go I think.

The LCS-20 is actually indoor / outdoor rated, and it can supply 15 amps continuous so it's fine for the Empulse. It's a little cheaper at $395, so if you wanted to wire up your own 240V plug it might be a cheaper way to go.

+1 on the LCS-20.

It's the one I chose for my San Francisco to Ventura CA trip. It's the same size as the 120V one that came with your bike.

It's easy enough to wire on the plug yourself. Search for discussion on this forum.
