Brammo Enertia / Screen Failure?
« on: December 06, 2013, 04:30:35 PM »
After 2 years of constant riding the last 2 years have only seen intermittent riding. Last night I was to take it for a longer ride than usual (20mi vs 15mi) and upon checking it was down to 97% so hooked it up for charging to top things off.  Screen was showing all pixels black when I went down a couple hours later to start my ride. Everything except the screen was behaving normally so I took the chance. By the end of the 10mi leg was able to barely make out the information on the screen. Parked for a couple hours and the same process repeated on the return trip. We're having a slight cold spell here, about 39F but the temperature has never been an issue before and the original failure was while still in the garage.

Any ideas/recommendations?

2009 Enertia. Original screen was replaced in Jan/Feb 2010 but has otherwise been working fine.

I don't think it likely that an adapter would be able to get approval since the J1772 seems to require proximity detection per Wikipedia. It looks like there are people making them but I don't know if SAE would be willing to allow an official version.

That socket is also large enough they'd need to include it in early design. The current charging socket is under the seat on an Enertia and I don't think that would work for J1772 charging (which would require leaving the seat off while charging).

That would be a custom AC inverter right, or is there some simple way to get 120VAC from 72VDC?

I'd imagine my Enertia would pull a lot more than 150 Wh/mi at 62 mph although just running # it seems to make sense, wonder if the batteries sag too much...hmm anybody getting 20 miles range at 60mph?

Looking at it from the other direction to get 100 wH/mi on my Enertia I'd probably have to keep it at 35mph steady, or real world more like 20mph.

Good find!

I was thinking about the earlier comment/question you had about whether the USB connection on the bike is powered or not.  I don't know the answer, but this morning, after riding in the 40 degree temps and freezing my fingers, I researched a bit on heated gloves and... of course most of them have to be powered off the vehicle's 12V system.

Amazing that no one has yet to come up with a basic aftermarket 12v socket for the Enertia.  >:(

Didn't realize you guys started getting that cold so early, is that normal for this time of year? I don't recall it being that cold in my many years in Southern Ontario until closer to Halloween.

I really have to give Zero credit for moving quickly into other markets. They have just signed up 9 dealers in Canada. That is half as many dealers as BMW have in that country. I hope their batteries like cold, rain and snow.

All the riders I knew in Ontario garaged (and winterized) their bikes as soon as snow started falling. In fact that's one reason I never seriously considered riding until I moved to the SF area. Maybe dirtbikers are different up there, I never knew any.

Can't wait to see another Enertia in the wild, even if it's just a rental.

The primary danger of using your high beam as your daytime running light is that if it goes out you're much less likely to notice, which means you no longer have any backup should your low beam goes out at night. Sounds like a reasonable argument to me but easily low enough probability that it probably doesn't matter. I'm trying to remember how often I've ever had a headlight go on a motorcycle...I'm sure I must have had one or two in the past 17 years.

I don't know the legality of riding without a headlight during the day but I do know the manufacturers are required to have the headlight running. I wouldn't consider riding without the headlights on -- heck I used to run with them on in my car (before automated systems).

As an aside you can ride an Enertia without the headlight on...it looks like it only checks to see if the headlight is on when starting from a dead stop. Of course this would mean having to blip the headlight on every time you stop, but I guess if you're into saving a couple pennies a day. Then again, you'd save more money by going on an extreme diet, both from food costs and less energy required to accelerate.

I haven't used any 3rd party locks on my Enertia, but for a time I used a disc lock. It didn't fit on my Honda VTX and for a time I carried a big Kryptonite chain. For the Enertia I just haven't worried about it that much as it's not something most thieves would be interested in for parts. At this time I'm also not parking in any higher risk areas.

How many miles per charge do you really get?  Have you ever run out?
With the hills on my commute I estimate 30 miles. I regularly hit 25 miles and have yet to run out.

Quote
How fast does it really go?  If i only weigh 150, will it go over 60 mph?
I'm 200lbs and am carrying a full load in my backpack and I can get to 60 going up a pretty steep hill. I've had not problem getting it to 70 on the freeway the few times I've tried.

Quote
How comfortable is the ride for a decently long trip.
This is a non-issue since it only has enough charge for about an hour of 35mph riding.

Quote
How visible Is it, do you worry about being run over by a truck, it seems pretty small
It's a relatively tall bike...in some ways you're more visible than in your Golf. Like any motorcycle the biggest danger is people pulling out in front of you. Having cars lane change into you happens periodically but is pretty easy to avoid.

Quote
How bad is the milage when you take it on a 55 mile and hour road?
If you're doing 55mph your range will drop a fair bit. I'd be surprised to get 20 miles.

Quote
Does is tell you your expeced range left or just have a gadge?
One of the dash screens (the one I always use) indicates an estimate of remaining range.

I’m coming from never riding a motorcycle but wanting the most efficient commuting vehicle when weather is favorable.
Please take a motorcycle safety course.

I just charge up at home...it's at full every time I start out for the day. I did check with building management at my office building and I can either charge down in the garage (paying for parking, about $30) and that it would be ok for me to charge from the lobby if the need arose (definitely not a regular thing though).

If it was needed I wouldn't have any issue plugging in at many businesses (after getting permission from the employee/manager on premises). I doubt I would need to charge for more than an hour in any of those situations.

Does that big hill seem to pull more out of the battery each time (on the same charge)? I have a hill with a 45mph speed limit on the beginning + end of my commute and it really seems to suck more out of the batteries at the end than the beginning.

Looks like hard bags on the bike...last I heard they were still working on the mounting brackets, has that changed?
I was looking back at the Givi bag thread and Brian said this:
Quote
We've also designed a much more rigid mounting frame for these bags to allow you to carry more weight.

If you're interested in getting them, it sounds to me like all you have to do is order them.  I'm considering it myself, given that my search for a top box with a taillight seems to come to a dead end when I add in the "affordable" element.

Every time I've asked my tech (Jen, same as yours) she's told me that they had an issue with the brackets and we're still waiting on them.
