Rain and a wet track slows the Brammo down just a bit. :)

Thanks guys. I'm with you Brian and I'm definitely looking forward to another few days there to practice/race more.

No problem.  Went back and watched the Race 2 video.  Looks like you're back shifting twice going into turn 1 and then immediately over-rev'ing out of it.  I would try sticking with 5th and see how that feels.  Also looks like you ran 6th through the final corner and onto the front straight - which may actually be the advantage you had over Pete down the front straight.  Does that sound right?  If so, I would feel even more strongly that you could run that full course in 5th and 6th.  Maybe even give you the option of running up a tooth on the rear if you wanted to play with something else.
You're right on in all, Brian. I was in 6 before I came out of the last turn and that helped me to gain going in the straight. I shifted up as we were in the corner before the straight. I was going to try 5 throughout next time and maintain corner speed better. I'll be racing against ICE bikes this next time. I don't think there will be another eBike with me in the two races I have scheduled...so it'll be a little different race. Thanks again for your thoughts.

Yes - peak power occurs around 5k, and then you enter into a "field weakening" zone that attempts to maintain power up to about 8k.  The power does start to taper off after the peak, but not so significantly as to say that it is always necessary to shift in a race condition.  At a track, you often find (even on a gas bike) that you will run higher revs than you would otherwise run in order to not shift at an inopportune time on corner exit.  Having the ability to "hang a gear" a bit longer with little penalty is what four-stroke, inline-four Japanese bikes do very well.  The other option you have is to run a higher gear into the corner, trying to maintain corner speed and drive out with plenty of rpm window to work with.

Given his result, Bob probably got it pretty close to right to find the correct compromise - in this case, letting the motor over-run peak power a bit on the exits.  An area where it might be possible to improve is on the straight, where you're really just trying to maximize your acceleration rate in a straight line.  In this case, targeting a shift at 5-6k will ensure that you're getting the most of the power available.
Thanks for weighing in Brian. Appreciate the insight. I have some more races and practice at Roebling in two weeks with WERA along with the big bike. I'll try some turns at a higher gear on a couple of corners to see how that feels during practice. If it doesn't mess my rhythm up, I'll incorporate during the race.

Interesting to see how the fairing allowed you to take the other Empulse every time in the straights.

I was wondering why you spent so much time above 6000 RPM with all the warning lights on. Were you maxed out in 6th gear during those times?
I never looked at it during the race. The video is the first time I saw it. :)

Only between turn 3/4 I felt I lost power due to high rpms and it was in a spot where shifting would have been problematic (near mid turn). I just rode it through. I also maxed it a couple of times in 1-2-3 from the start and lost some ground. I'm going back to Roebling in two weeks so I try some different things then.

On my ICE race bike I shift by feel/sound, never or rarely looking at tach/speedo. I'm still getting used to the eBike since it is less visceral in that sense.

I really, really hope it doesn't look like either of those bikes. Call me conservative, but that is such just too much of a leap for mainstream acceptance, no matter how many advantages it has. And considering that right now, electric motorcycles make the most sense in a crowded urban setting, a streamliner fairing just makes no sense. A nice half-fairing like this gentleman?

Sure. But some recumbent weirdness is a sure way to kill your electric brand (imho).
That's my bike! :) I like the sport fairing look. Naked is fine as well.

Thanks for the recommendation. That's a good price! I'm on the right track and going to shop little bit to see what's on the market, reviews, etc.
Sounds good. Good luck hunting! :)

This is the one that I got. What is specifically nice about this one (besides the price) is you'll note the bulb shield. This helps the light dispersion from the stock light without having to add a projector lense/mount for the bulb. I get great light at night without too much dispersion or blinding folks. I've tested it on my wife with her oncoming in her car and she confirmed I don't blind her - just bright usable light.  ;D

A couple of other thoughts:
1) Get 6K. IMO...besides better lighting, that Kelvin looks the closest to an OEM Audi/M-B/BMW car Xenon...makes it look it came OEM on the bike.

2) Make sure you get the slim ballast (my link has that).

Here's a vid from race 1, from my tail on a gyro mounted camera.

I really enjoyed the entire week - met some new folks and enjoyed reconnecting with those I know. Making the podium on Saturday was just icing on the cake.

Having 40-46 bikes out there sure made things interesting - had some very close calls with a few ICE folks that were off their line(s) on Sunday. Ended up slowing me down since it took me time to get around them in the corners. By the time I got around them I didn't have enough time to catch up to other Brammo guys. Arthur mentioned he was having suspension issues slowing him down on Sunday.

In the end, no disappointments (except I missed meeting you in person Brian :) )...it was a great time with great folks. I'm already making my plans for next year.

Here is a close up of the bike.

Brammo Empulse / Re: Sachs Rear Shock Pre-load Adjustment - How To ???
« on: October 03, 2014, 03:51:55 PM »
I used a small chisel-ended screwdriver for mine. Wasn't banged up too bad but did add some indentations to the rings. Agreed with Shinysideup...the shock is the easiest I've ever removed from a bike. Literally takes 5 minutes now after some practice with swapping Ohlins/Sachs. Easier to adjust out of bike. In hindsight I would have done that instead.

Brammo Empulse / Re: Olin Rear Shock for Empulse R

Hello,
I've done a Ohlins TTXGP on my Empulse R.

Here's a link to the thread here: http://brammoforum.com/index.php?topic=2559.0

Mine is used for track + street. Setting your sag should be the done first before looking at bigger/different springs and other adjustments. If you can't get the sag right with your geared up weight with the existing spring that'll give you an idea that you'll likely need to change it out. Doing my sag made a big difference when I set mine for my geared weight. You also want to synch up rebound with rear/front before looking at other settings. The rise needs to be completely equal...all the OEM motos I've had I needed to make some rebound adjustments to get to that baseline.

Nutshell: Ohlins is great for track, less so for street and really for the cost is likely overkill. I'm 165 w/o gear. The Sachs seems fine for spirited street use when the sag is set (I had to make a decent amount of adjustment).
