GoPro mount...
« on: August 18, 2014, 08:42:18 PM »
Thinking of getting a gopro...what mount do people use/like?

I figure a couple of curved ones for my helmets...but was thinking of the chest mount as it seems it would go well with the Empulse seating position....

Thoughts?

Thanks

Gavin

Recommendation: Best bang for the buck is probably the Hero 3+ Silver.  It has 1080P, which is pretty much the highest functional (i.e. 60 FPS) recording resolution, and most of the bells and whistles.  I got the Black just because it was the fanciest, and all it really adds are things like 4K resolution and the remote, neither of which I ever use.  If you don't care about an extra 100 bucks, go with the Black.

I have mine chin-mounted, as I want the camera to point when I turn my head.  I didn't like the top of the helmet teletubby-style mount mostly because of the wind resistance, and I think a side mount would feel weird from a balance/symmetry standpoint.

The ONLY downside to the Gopro is really the battery life.  I get maybe an hour and a half of life out of the thing.  Which I guess is pretty decent when you consider the insane recording quality and small form factor, but yeah all things considered it is really the weak point of the device.

Necessary accessories to have:

If you combine the charger and 2 extra batteries with a small USB battery pack, you can charge the extra batteries in your backpack or whatever while using one in the camera.

Anyhow: yes, do it.  Gopros are great little devices, and I ride with one rolling 100% of the time now -- partially for insurance 'what if' reasons, and partially to capture funny stuff that might happen.

Yeah, silver was my planned model to buy...

Hadn't thought about chin mount...do you use any special attachments, or just the standard mount that comes with the gopro?

Probably will get it this weekend...have a fun ride coming up in a month and want to get the set up dialed in before that ride...

Awesome video, Jeff!

The helmet mount is great for capturing where you're looking.  You have the flexibility to direct the viewer's attention anywhere at any time.  However, this can give viewers motion sickness if your head darts around a lot like mine.

The chest mount is great for capturing test rides where you want to show not only the view, but the handlebar, controls, and dashboard as well.  For example, my wife's test ride of the Harley-Davidson Project LiveWire.

A suction cup mount is great for when you have a nice patch of smooth fairing to stick it to, but of course you can only control what you see by steering the whole vehicle, unless the camera is within reach and can be easily aimed without loosening it too much.

There are cameras made specifically to be attached to a motorcycle helmet like the Drift Ghost. It might be better option then a gopro which is kind of meant for everything.
