Wiring stuff on the Empulse R

While there's been some side conversations about wiring up electric gear in other topics, the cold weather finally motivated me to get my heated vest hooked up ASAP...long underwear isn't cutting it anymore.   :P

The 12v connector for the Empulse looks like a Tamiya connector (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Tamiya_Connector.gif), but I think it's slightly different - if anyone else sources a plug that works, please post:



The challenge is that it's located in under the side panel in the front:



My ideal location is to mount a connector in one of the black plastic side panels (left side by the seat), since there's plenty of room to run wiring behind them as well:

The plan...  I'm ordering a Powerlet socket so I can use the same adapters I've been using with my BMW.  The SAE ones used by guys like Battery Tender would work too, but the Powerlet sockets have nice snap-closed covers when they're not in use, and won't dangle like a SAE plug connector.

I'll post as I make progress, but fire away with any other ideas or if someone has located the fuse block yet - guessing I'll find it once I pull the "tank" covers.  But I won't dig into it until I have all the parts since I'd rather keep riding until the next rainy day.   ;)

Also - just for fun, I'm attaching some other under-seat photos.  The seat comes off with only one bolt, and there's lots of room for running the wiring I'm planning for the Powerlet socket.  You can see the top of one of the battery modules once the seat is off along with the top cover of the on-board "EV Powercharger".

You'll also see the small USB data logger under the right side of the seat.  It's a small SanDisk module plugged into a USB cable.  It seems like it's active while the bike is charging as well (red blinking light on the SanDisk module).  I'll see if I can copy anything off it later.

It looks just like a Tamiya connector!
Have then on my sons E-MAXX RC truck!
You could just pop by your local RC hobby store
And check it out,,  ::)

< 5 kg is very good.

The Delta-Q QuiQ chargers for our Zero bikes are < 7 kg, can pull 8A on 120V AC. So 16A on 120/230V AC sounds really nice.

Their datasheet lists Production Units availability Q3 2013. Either they were pessimistic or Brammo got an early shipment : )

After poking around online, I'm thinking this might be a Molex connector.  The Tamiya ones have a slightly different housing shape.

The connector we're chasing is NOT the 12V power tap.

It  has no voltage on it. The real tap is higher up. I'm not sure where, because, when Brammo had my bike, they knew this was an issue for me, so they dropped a pigtail with that same white connector on it so I could see it. Its source was up higher, somewhere under the "tank" which I have yet to take off to explore the pigtail's origin.

I cut the pigtail's connector off and fastened the pigtail stripped wires to a Centech fuse bock which I tiewrapped to the radiator hose, which doesn't get very hot, and was quite handy.

Check out the post I just did on my Powerlet install - the Brammo guys corrected me as well when I asked and pointed me to the purple/black connector that's tucked higher up.  It's switched and seems to work great with a vest.

I like the Centech idea for future expansion...I was hoping there were "terminals" off the 12V DC fuse block under the tank, but it didn't look simple when I had everything stripped off.  I'll need to splice in my radar detector at some point once I decide on a mount that doesn't look too bad.

Totally agree!  The Centech looks like the way to go if you have multiple items to connect.
