When was the last time a gas fire hit the front page of a news website?

I think there are a lot of IC auto manufacturers and Big Oil companies who would like to see Tesla fail for one reason or another - all having to do with money. They have the influence required to make sure that every problem that Tesla encounters (and especially something dramatic like a fire) get reported in a big way.

Someone did the math on another site. 1 in 1000 gas cars catch fire each year. While 1 in every 7000 Tesla's have caught fire. That is a good safety record and will only get better over time.
