That's about a mile from Zero HQ : ( I think Granite Creek is one of their "fun run" roads..

It's hard to tell, but that kind of looks like a red Empulse on the ground.

This is really terrible news no matter what bike it is.  However,  the underside looks a bit more like a Zero S to me...

See the "X" stiffening bead on the sheetmetal + the louvers towards the rear? I can kind of make those out in the accident photo.

Like I said, a very, very tragic event and I feel very sorry for the rider's family.

A very sad day for a lot of people...thoughts and prayers all around...

With respect to identifying the bikes involved, it looks like an orange Zero DS parked next to it in the photo.

And that brings up some rather sad speculations on why a pair of bikes would be out on that road around lunch time with one of the riders being a 71 year old man.  I dearly hope that someone at Zero didn't just lose a very good friend or relative to add heartbreak to the tragedy.  More prayers...

From the Los Gatos Patch:

http://losgatos.patch.com/groups/police-and-fire/p/los-gatos-motorcyclist-dies-in-fatal-crash

"The victim has been identified by the Santa Cruz County coroner's office as Alan Yelensky.

At about 1 p.m. Wednesday, Yelensky was riding a 2014 Zero motorcycle south on Granite Creek Road near Blair Ranch Road south of Scotts Valley when he collided with a northbound Ford F-250 truck, California Highway Patrol Officer Leland Adkins said.

The collision caused Yelensky to be ejected from the motorcycle, and he landed about 15 feet down an embankment, Adkins said.

Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene. The driver of the truck was not injured, Adkins said.

One of the two vehicles had apparently crossed over the double-yellow line that separates the two lanes on Granite Creek, Adkins said."

The article ends with what sounds like breezy ad copy for Zero, tackily irrelevant writing, IMHO.

I'm sad tonight for Alan's family and friends. I'm 70 and this hits home.

I know a lot of riders that cross the DY when they feel they can see ahead sufficiently. I've always been trained that it's a very bad habit to get into because you're training your mind/body to follow a line though the curves that may instantly be unavailable to you. Of course here, we don't know who crossed. Let's be careful out there.
