Brammo and Leyden
« on: August 03, 2011, 10:13:12 AM »
An article about Leyden, the battery manufacturer, sheds some light on the confusion out there about whether "Brammo Power" batteries, slated for the Enertia Plus, will be manufactured by Leyden.
Quote
Although Leyden has played up a research effort last year to see if its battery cells would be a good fit for Brammo’s electric motorcycles, the company doesn’t have a supply agreement with Brammo. Brammo’s director of product development, Brian Wismann, told me in May that Brammo was waiting for the automotive version of Leyden’s cells. He said Leyden’s technology promises to deliver battery packs with good thermal management, energy density and longevity.

More information in the article itself.

I am "denser" than their batteries I guess....

does this mean that Brammo was waiting for the new batteries and will be using them or will be evaluating them? And so Brammo is still using Valence batteries? Or, since this was from May, did Brammo get the Leyden batteries for the Plus (hence part of the delay)?

On a side note, Lightning is now using Ener1 batteries....did Brammo look into Ener1?

More confirmation since the last thread:
http://brammoforum.com/index.php?topic=729.0

If Brammo is building up the Enertia+ supply line, then they must have a lead on a battery supplier. I assume (you know what that means) that the 2011 Empulse RR is NOT using Leyden cells. Very curious who they are using, and whether Brammo intends to use the same cells for the Enertia+ and Empulse street bikes.

Valence U-Charge LiFePO4 batteries are too heavy for the long-quoted Enertia+ / Empulse specs. It's possible they have some denser batteries.

Well in the Production at Flextronic video (the latest video from Brammo) they are still using the Valence battery...

At the 2:02 mark.

Now it could just be the Enertia and nit the Plus...nor the Empulse...but right now we really can't say much till me see a Production Plus or Empulse...

Speaking of which...anybody here anything from Brammo yet? 90 days puts us into November...but I'm keep hoping that 90 days gets shortened.

The Enertia Plus and the Empulse will both have the latest Brammo Power battery packs.
No battery manufacturer involved in the design, development or production.
The unique pack design and battery management system are designed by Brammo and will probably be assembled by Flextronics....

Ucharge line hasn't doubled in capacity density. So the video almost certainly shows the Enertia 3.1 - probably testing and training the assembly process.

Thespecialone - is Brammo producing their own cells as well as designing the packs? I'd love to see some more detailed specifications on the battery.

Thanks for all the info and helping out here, thespecialone....

But I will admit that the wording there gives me pause...I "assumed" that the battery manufacturing would be long settled since the bikes are supposively being assembled by Flextronics as we speak/type.

Electric motorcycles without batteries = furniture or lawn art :)
