Should the Fan be caged?

The motor-cooling fan seems a bit vulnerable to me.  It sits on the aft side of the body and it has no protective cage on it.  Granted, it's blowing out, so there is no danger of chopped off fingers,  but it's just so open.  I was wiping down my bike once and I actually did end up with the towel stopping the fan - accidentally. 

I'm more concerned about something falling on or into the blades and breaking them, than my own safety. 

I just wondered if anyone else has thought about this or even fashioned their own fan cage.

I suppose you could place a small, water-proof screen over the fan using some Loctite. I had thought about small pebbles and sticks that might fly into the fan while the fan is off that could cause some trouble. I can report that after 1,300 miles of backroads with plenty of pebble and stick damage opportunities, it has not been a problem.

I only wipe down my Enertia while it is completely off to be safe.

I always read certain posts and think "that can't be safe," but I try not to post it too often. I have conviced myself that my motorcycle riding days are over if I end up getting injured by ignoring my own safety rules. I would NEVER hear the end of it from friends and family who think I am already a bit tapped in the first place for wanting to commute by motorcycle.


I checked out the images and like the QSB series from digikey.com on page 2. The solution I was thinking of was more spartan, but that could look good.

Ah HA!  From a close-up picture of what I assume was a pre-production prototype:

So they did have a cover on the fan.  Wonder why it's not there anymore.
