2013 Brammo Empulse R ICON Spec 32 #6 -- Seattle area -- $4,000
http://www.rideicon.com/the-ride/bikes/icon-x-brammo-spec32

12,800 miles.  Second owner.  Title in hand.  Located in the greater Seattle area (western Washington State, USA).

I love this e-bike and have the license plate EBIKE to share it with the world!  :)

Yes, it still runs fine (rode it today, in fact)!
Yes, it still charges (from 40% to 100% in 3-4 hours if needed)!
Yes, it still looks great!

The only catch is that "V58" messages have been appearing on the dashboard.  It still runs fine, but I don't have the technical skill or tools to troubleshoot.

Details and pictures to follow.

Brammo Empulse / V58 error
« on: August 10, 2019, 08:02:17 PM »
Hi,

I accidentally posted this to a V58 error thread in the Enertia section (http://brammoforum.com/index.php?topic=3632.0), so now the post is here.

For background:  on my most recent commute, the V58 error message started blinking on and off frequently and erratically (without pattern) on the digital dashboard, sometimes accompanied by a red warning light on the tachometer side.  Usually, error messages stay on until power cycling, or stay on continuously for a few seconds.  It is unusual for me to see the error message flicker on and off again many times, over several minutes.

Assuming that I can follow the advice in that Enertia thread to clean a connector, am I looking in the right place for that connector?  (See Enertia thread for context and photos below for an idea of where I'm looking.)

If I cannot simply clean a connector to make the error message go away, what exactly is defective and what are my options?

After removing the upper and lower body panels, and disconnecting the battery, I'm not sure where to find the electrical connector that needs to be cleaned.

Under the lower bodywork at the front is a black rectangular box with the electrical connector attaching to the right side of the converter, this is the DC/DC convertor.

At the bottom of the bike, looking back from the front, I see a vertical radiator and a horizontal heat sink.  (See photo #1)

On the right side, there is a fat black one inch diameter cable running towards the radiator.  There is also a think grey one quarter inch diameter cable whose wires split into *two* black plastic connectors, seen at the bottom right of photo #2, to the right of the yellow warning label.

These two black plastic connectors are zip tied to the larger cable (pipe?).  Are these what you are talking about?

Unfortunately, I don't see anything that resembles the photo that Qutaneous posted in March.  (I suppose that this is one of the differences between the Enertia and the Empulse R.)

Off Topic / Lightning Motorcycles booth at Hong Kong Formula E event
« on: October 08, 2016, 09:24:55 AM »
Posted a brief report at EMF, but the summary is this:  No e-motorcycle manufacturers other than Lightning and Yadea were represented at this opportunity to get lots of eyes on EVs.

I would have expected at least Zero Motorcycles to show, but perhaps there is still egg on their face due to the charging fire that grounded the entire HK Police fleet of Zeros.  The only police motorcycles I've seen around here are BMWs.

Lynnwood Motoplex appears to be having trouble moving their one and only Victory Empulse TT, so they've put it on sale for about the price I bought my 2013 Empulse R: $14k.  However, since you'll be the first owner, you'll also qualify for a further 10% credit from the Feds (http://www.afdc.energy.gov/laws/11382).

If you're in the market near Seattle and want a brand new Empulse, this might be the deal you're waiting for.  Price good through the end of August (federal 10% credit good on purchases made through the end of 2016).

It's that time of year again.  This year the date is Sunday, September 18th.  The place hasn't changed:  XXX Root Beer Drive-In like last year.

Looking forward to meeting +progress- there again with our Empulses, and hope my Zero Motorcycle friends will also attend.

What are y'all doing for NDEW?

Brammo Enertia / Woman passes basic riding course on an Enertia
« on: August 07, 2016, 05:46:27 PM »
It's a refresher course, but glad to see put to rest the question of whether an electric motorcycle can be used to pass a riding test.  Not that I think it's difficult, but puzzled by the lack of stories about it.

Brammo Empulse / Brookville, PA police dept. might get a free Brammo
« on: August 01, 2016, 11:23:28 PM »
“It costs about 90 cents for a full day,” said Brown. “And it doesn’t make a sound.”

Sounds like the PD love the bike.  But how they got to keep it is rather disturbing.

The chief said a factory representative delivered the vehicle for review by the borough. The council decided that the town could not afford to spend $14,000 on the bike and instructed the chief to return it to the manufacturer.

That is when things took an unexpected turn. Chief Brown contacted Brammo only to find they had no interest in the motorcycle. The company had sold its motorcycle division to Polaris in January 2015. Brammo anted to concentrate on its lithium battery business.

Chief Brown then contacted Polaris who had no interest in the old Brammo machine.

For those of you in the Seattle area, there will be an EV show at the XXX Root Beer Drive-In in Issaquah tomorrow.  Details at https://driveelectricweek.org/event.php?eventid=556.  I look forward to meeting other Seattle-area Brammo riders there.

My 2013 Empulse R has passed 6,000 miles, so it's time to make a service appointment.  The company that had been Brammo's local authorized service center, Seattle E-Bike, referred me with no explanation to the local Victory dealership, Lynnwood Motoplex.

Today I paid them a visit and learned the following:

* Yes, they have an Empulse TT in stock, having pride of place in their Victory/Indian showroom near the window looking nice in red, but otherwise quite similar to the Empulse R we know.  Pictures to follow.
* No, they've not sold even one yet.
* They were surprised to see someone show up with an Empulse they hadn't sold themselves.
* They were doubly surprised that I'd bought it used (http://brammoforum.com/index.php?topic=2550.0).
* They think they can service my Empulse R, but they would need equipment and information specific to that model because of its differences from the TT.
* To get that equipment and information might take a couple of weeks.
* They estimate the labor cost alone would be $600.  My 3,000-mile service appointment cost closer to $300, so this estimate seems a little high, even if the extra work for the 6k service is to replace the brake fluid and suspension oil.

How have your service appointment experiences been?  Have you had your Brammos serviced by Victory technicians yet?  Did they charge you reasonable prices compared to your Brammo authorized technicians?

Brammo Empulse / System Fault B40
« on: July 04, 2015, 01:30:13 PM »

Saw "System Fault B40" (manual: "BMS Back in Idle Mode") a couple of times this past week after turning on the key and pressing the starter button to activate the throttle.  Once I also saw "System Fault S65" (manual: "Motor Controller -- Sequence Fault (usually, throttle was not closed when controller powered on)").

The S65 I can understand as the hand is resting on the throttle while pressing the starter button.

My daily commute is 34 miles and I recharge to full overnight, so the batteries aren't getting stressed out and I'm sure 5-6 hours of sitting at full charge every day gives the batteries every opportunity to balance.

This being July 4th weekend, and my dealership limping along after suffering a fire, I doubt that I can get this serviced right away.  How much should I be concerned about B40 appearing twice in one week?

I see that someone else here has encountered B40, but I didn't see the other two error codes mentioned at http://brammoforum.com/index.php?topic=2986.msg21956.

Victory Empulse / No official information yet
« on: June 11, 2015, 06:58:39 PM »
For the heck of it, I called up both a Seattle-area Victory dealer and Victory corporate today in the wake of their success at the Isle of Man TT to ask if they had any information for the public about future electric motorcycle products.  The local dealer had no information at this time.  The woman from corporate on the phone sounded very unsettled for being put off script (maybe because the call was being recorded for quality purposes) and could only suggest that if such information were to become public, it would be on the Victory web site.  The best that she could offer was that she would log it as a "suggestion".  Oh well.

Brammo Empulse Mods / National Cycle Deflector DX windshield
« on: April 19, 2015, 12:24:43 AM »

FWIW... National Cycle is the supplier for the Brammo designed windscreen option, as they were for the Enertia Plus windscreen.  They make good stuff!

I just picked up one of these and ran into two problems while assembling it.

#1 I'd incorrectly measured the diameter of the handlebars.  The parts I'd ordered are for a 7/8" bar and the Empulse handlebar is thicker (one inch?).

#2 There are many cables zip-tied along the handlebar except for the gap in the center next to the keyhole.  Clamping something on top of these wires would likely damage them over time, but the gap in the middle of the handlebar isn't wide enough for two mounting clamps with quick-release knobs side by side.

If you have one of these screens on your Empulse, may I ask how you overcame these installation problems?  Obviously I should replace the 7/8" clamps, but is one inch the correct diameter?  Is there an alternative to cutting the zip ties and re-routing the cables?

In the photo, I've moved the shield approximately where it belongs, but of course it's not attached properly--the windshield's clamps are resting on the mirror stalks instead of the handlebars.

Brammo Empulse / Trying to identify missing screw for battery bracket
« on: January 04, 2015, 11:17:09 PM »
Hello,

I've just lost a screw on one of my Empuse R's battery brackets.  The metal piece below that was also attached to this screw is now loose and I think it is causing a noticeable vibration at speeds somewhere between 30-55 mph.

If I walk into a hardware store and ask for help finding a replacement, what should I ask for?  I could also bring another one in as an example.  Pictures attached.

Thanks!
