Insurance
« on: August 26, 2011, 11:24:19 PM »
I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere else in the forum yet.  I talked to my bike insurer, and in Washington state they have not yet established the ability to insure electric motorcycles.  They are working on it, but I don't yet know if they will have the system ready when the bike is.  You might want to check with your insurer.

And trust me, you don't want to be riding without coverage.

Might want to try the forum's excellent search function: http://brammoforum.com/index.php?topic=115.0

Try Progressive, GEICO and Allstate.

Thanks for the tip Harry, I haven't even thought about insurance yet, it's going to be a bitch for me!
But my tickets will roll off by the time the Empulse comes out, and I'll just have one minor fender bender on my history...
I don't know about you guys, but I've had very good luck with my farmer's agent, especially with my driving history...

That premium you were quoted seems kind of ludicrous to me. I have six motorcycles covered with Progressive for $250K/$500K liability and $100K property damage. No other coverage, as it is worth it for me to self-insure my motorcycles for things like uninsured, collision and comprehensive. (I have personal medical insurance coverage.) All of my six motorcycles, including two BMW's, a Triumph, a Yamaha FZ1, a Suzuki SV650 and my 2009 sepex Electric Motorsport GPR-S are insured for a yearly premium of less than $400 (which is a 40% increase over what I was charged last year). The premium for my GPR-S is the lowest at only $22 for the year. Two years ago, I only paid $5! to insure the bike for an entire year.

At a motorcycle show three years ago, I was quoted $3500 a year for full coverage for my Yamaha FZ1. When I dropped the collision/theft/comprehensive/uninsured coverage, the premium dropped to only $150 a year. It dropped below $100 after various discounts that received from Progressive. This is why I save my money before I buy and pay cash for my motorcycles. It is well worth the time and effort and you end up paying a lot less for your vehicle over the time that you own it.

I have my 07 GSXR750 insured for about $18/month. Full coverage w/$500 deductible. State Farm. Clean record with no claims, ever.

Did you speak with an agent? Are you a new rider/driver? My car insurance was that high after I got my license when I was still a teenager. If you are over 25, I would expect your insurance to be considerable lower with Progressive.

I got the quote online. I will be new to motorcycle riding, I have been a car driver for almost 9 years. I am less then 5 months from turning 25. Even Statefarm (who has my 2 cars, 2 different life policies, med. reimbursement) wants just as much or more.

I would call a Progressive agent and run some scenarios by them to get a better deal (e.g. you will be 25 when you need the insurance, you will have a motorcycle license and will have taken a safety course, etc.)

I paid twice as much as I should have on insurance during my first year of ownership, then I switched to Progressive.

A lot depends on location...my SV was $33/year to insure in Southern Indiana, and now it's $190/year in Chicago.  My 1098S is actually cheaper to put full coverage on than my SV here, too.

I'd also suggest giving GEICO a try.

Always check with many different places and tell the agents the price you got from the other agent. If you are patient, you can do that for a few days until you get the price you want.

Those people are almost as competitive as car dealers; they might take no profit just to make sure you don't go to the competition.

I never paid a dollar more than the cost price on any car and, once,  I paid less than that just by being a patient buyer. The guy was calling me some weird names when I left, though.  ;D

I have insurance with Progressive (via their subsidiary Drive Insurance) on my '07 Vectrix. It only costs me $130/year in California. At just a bit over $10/month I can't complain.
