Empulse buyer age
« on: June 07, 2011, 02:47:04 AM »
I cannot understand why the sport bike kids have no interest in the EMPULSE. The older sport riders like myself understand, but most of the youngsters laugh at the Empulse everytime I bring it up. What's it like in your area?  ;D

I was at a motorcycle show last weekend (vintage bikes, but mine was in the "future classics" section).  If they scoffed at the top speed, I would show them pictures of the Empulse and every single one of them (except the Harley guys) said something like, "now THAT'S what I'm talkin' about!"

it will take some time....

it is no different than Zero with the off-road motorcycle people...Zero is a joke to them. No noise? A bike race is all about the sound to them. Hopefully that will change, but right now everybody, or at least most people, in the off-road circuit make fun of Zero...

Give it time and people will come around.

One thing I heard Azhar Hussain say in an interview about the "noise" aspect:  The volume of the sound of an I.C.E is closely related to its inefficiency.

I go up to Alice's Restaurant, a major biker hangout in the SF Bay Area, almost every Sunday morning and have tried to discuss electric motorcycles with everyone that I meet up there over the past two years. I have found virtually zero interest in the subject. Once or twice I have been humored with conversations lasting a few minutes, but they were just being nice. Most people would rather kick tires, instead of kicking air.

I think it will stay that way until the bikes finally get on the road and develop some sort of track record. Since on-road models don't exist that can make it up (and back home) to most places like Alice's right now, the only thing that will attract attention are racing exhibitions, particularly if electric motorcycles can race directly against IC motorcycles and start beating them. That will get the attention of many enthusiasts. Unfortunately, I figure that it will be a few years before the technology gets developed enough for this to happen in anything but a short sprint race.

I figure that keeping the subject in the motorcycle press really helps, though.

The volume of an unmuffled ICE is directly related to energy lost as sound in the conversion from chemical energy to mechanical energy.

But not to inefficiency: a more efficient but more powerful engine will likely be louder than an inefficient low-power engine, and a muffler does increase the efficiency of an ICE (converts sound energy into heat).

Didn't Alice's Restaurant burn in a wildfire recently? If so, I'm glad to here they've rebuilt. Electric motorcycles will always be "those funny little toys" until people can lay hands on them and/or see them in operation in person.

Back to the topic on making some noise. I hope somebody makes a sound device for the Empulse. I really don't want everybody looking at me for being dead silent   ;D

I would like others to think I have a normal motorcycle, not loud and annoying tho.  I think it would be fun too.  ;)

I am 23 and cannot wait to get an Empulse.  I have told people around my age about my plans and haven't received any laughter yet, just skepticism.

Just as others have said, its only a matter of getting them on the road and proving their viability.

On the subject of noise.  I would HATE to have some sound generating device on the Empulse.  I feel that somewhat defeats the purpose.  No offense to you, 1less, but I would think that such a device would make an Empulse rider seem like a poseur to the Harley/'Busa crowd.  And, this is considering the fact that I love the sound of a well tuned ICE with a nice exhaust.  In fact, my DD is a 3 liter with custom Magnaflow exhaust

Brammo has mentioned this a couple of times, no definitive word. There's legislation kicking around to require this for EV cars, may also trickle down to motorcycles as well. Nissan LEAF has a noise emitter at low speeds.

Personally I'd like a switchable emitter noise at parking lot speeds just so that a pedestrian doesn't walk out in front of me. I'm as likely as not to be invisible to cars anyhow, a noise emitter won't matter either way there.

At parking lot speeds I just yell out "Heads up!" -- same as if I'm on a bicycle.

The noise generator (for slow speeds) should have a rotary switch.  Settings would be something like
"Ducati, Harley, V8, turbine, chainsaw"   ;D

Star Wars theme, Jaws theme, tie fighter, Star Trek theme....if, at low speeds you have to make noise at least make it futuristic or musical...not just engine noise.
heck I would prefer Ice Cream Truck over "loud pipe", but that could have a undesirerable effect...kids running toward you vs away.

I've always wanted two horns on my scooters...1) a soft beep-beep horn that is kinda "hi" to a friend walking by and is also a mild "watch out" horn for around campus and the neighborhood and parking lots...and 2) the super loud highway horn for when cars try and kill you...

really a Brammo in a parking lot is not much different than a bicycle in a parking lot. slow speed and easy to maneuver and fast to stop or fast to speed up and avoid stuff and people...a soft horn beep would be more than enough vs a constant fake sound produced...especially since most people in parking lots are on their cell phones or have iPods playing...it is best to assume nobody hears you or sees you at any time...a sound generator could easy give one the false sense of security that people actually hear you and know you are there...never assume that or you will soon be hitting somebody or somebody will be hitting you...
